Preparing for Your Newborn Session

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most beautiful moments, and capturing those first precious days with a newborn session is a decision you’ll cherish forever. To help make your session smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free, I’ve put together this ultimate guide to prepare you for your little one’s big day in front of the camera.

1. Schedule Early

Newborns are best photographed within their first 5-14 days. During this time, they’re still sleepy, flexible, and comfortable in those adorable, curled-up poses. It’s a good idea to book your session during your second trimester to secure a spot, as I only accept 3 newborn sessions per month to ensure every family gets my full attention.

2. Feed Your Baby Before the Session

A well-fed baby is a happy, sleepy baby—exactly what we need for those dreamy poses! If possible, try to feed your baby right before the session starts. Don’t worry if they need a top-up during the session; we’ll take breaks as needed.

3. Dress Your Baby Simply

When you arrive, your baby should be in loose clothing that’s easy to remove to avoid marks on their delicate skin. Avoid overcomplicated outfits—simple is best! Most of the session will feature your baby in wraps, props, or their natural state.

4. Keep the Studio Warm

For studio sessions, I’ll ensure the space is warm and cozy, but for in-home sessions, consider turning up the heat slightly before I arrive. Newborns are most comfortable in a warm environment, especially when posed without clothing.

5. Relax and Trust the Process

I’ve photographed hundreds of newborns and am certified in Newborn Photography Safety, so your baby’s comfort and well-being are always my top priority. Sessions can last between 1-3 hours to allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and breaks. Sit back, relax, and let me work my magic!

6. Sibling and Parent Photos

If your package includes sibling or parent portraits, plan outfits in neutral or soft colors that complement each other. Avoid busy patterns or logos, as these can be distracting. I’ll guide you through posing to ensure everyone looks their best!

7. Prepare Your Home for In-Home Sessions

If you’ve opted for an in-home session, no need to worry about a spotless house. I’ll bring all the equipment and props we need, and we’ll focus on a few well-lit areas for the session. A simple declutter in those spaces is all that’s required.

8. Pack Essentials

For studio sessions, bring extra diapers, wipes, a pacifier (if your baby uses one), and any sentimental items you’d like to include in the photos. I have a curated collection of props, wraps, and outfits, but feel free to bring anything special that reflects your family’s story.

9. Be Prepared for the Unexpected

Newborns are wonderfully unpredictable! Whether it’s a diaper mishap, fussiness, or the need for extra feeding breaks, don’t stress—I’ve seen it all and will adapt to your baby’s needs.

10. Enjoy the Moment

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so take a deep breath and savor it. These photos will capture the beauty, innocence, and love of your baby’s first days—memories you’ll treasure for generations.
